Science 10 Review Flashcards
Ionic Hydrates
Some ionic compounds exist as hydrates. Hydrates decompose at low temperatures to produce water and an associated compound
Four indications a chemical change has occured
colour change, odour change, state change, energy change
Avogadro’s Number
6.02 x 10^23
What does subscript on a chemical formula indicate
The number of atoms of the element
Steps for balancing chemical equations
- write chemical formula for each reactant and product, including state
- order: metals, non metals besides hydrogen and oxygen w most atoms, hydrogen/oxygen whichever is in a combined state, hydrogen/oxygen whichever is uncombined
- check by counting atoms
- make sure equation is in lowest terms
What is molar mass and its unit?
The mass of one mole of a substance. Unit: (g/mol)
What are the types of molecular motion?
Vibrational, translational, rotational
What do coefficient represent in chemical equations
The number of molecules or formula units in a balanced equation.
What is an isotope
A variant of an element with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons. They have different atomic mass and physical properties but the same chemical properties as the element.
When is an ionic compound formed as a product in a reaction aqueous
If the solubility is high the substance will remain dissolved in solution (aq)
When does an ionic compound formed in a chemical reaction solid
If the compound has low solubility it will form a precipitate (s)
Empirical Knowledge
Observable knowledge
Theoretical knowledge
Explains and describes scientific observations in terms of ideas.
Law of conservation of mass
mass of reactants = mass of products
Periodic Law, who created it
Chemical and physical properties of elements repeat themselves in regular intervals, when the elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number. Dmitri Mendeleev, Russian chemist 1869
