Sci. - Matter, Transformation of Particles Flashcards
What is matter?
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Example: Air, Water, Table
What are the four postulates in the theory of matter?
Constant motion.
Spaces between the particles.
Higher energy = more speed and space between particles.
Multiple atoms make a molecule.
(CSHM)
What is mass?
amount of matter in a given object.
What is density?
Density describes how concentrated something is
What is solid to gas called?
Sublimation
What is gas to solid called?
Deposition
What is liquid to gas called?
Vaporization/Evaporation
What is Gas to Liquid called?
Condensation
What is Solid to Liquid called?
Melting
What is Liquid to Solid called?
Freezing
What is Gas to Plasma called?
Ionization
What is Plasma to Gas called?
Deionization/Recombination
How do particles in a solid act?
Vibrates in place
Packed tight together
cannot move past one another
How do particles in a liquid act?
Loosely packed
Can slide past one another
has more energy level than solids
How do particles in a gas act?
High energy levels and speeds
Particles far apart
can move freely
How do particles in plasma act and how does it have + and -?
Extremely high energy speeds
Superheated Matter
Particles move so fast they collide with other particles and force the electrons off of the atom, causing + and -
Does a solid have definite shape and volume?
Yes
Does a liquid have definite shape and volume?
Definite volume, no definite shape
Does a gas have a definite shape and volume?
No
Does plasma have a definite shape and volume?
No
