SCI Flashcards
Central cord syndrome
From hyperextension injuries
Presents as more upper extremity deficits vs lower extremities
SCI mnemonic
C4- shrug C5- hug C6- waiter C7- UPS C8- weight lifter
Brown sequard syndrome
From hemisectioning of cord
Disruption of descending lateral corticospinal tracts, ascending dorsal columns, ascending lateral spinothlamic tracts
Results in ipsilateral paralysis, proprioception, discriminative touch
Contra lateral loss of pain and temperature
Anterior cord syndrome
Flexion injuries
Motor, pain, pinprick, temperature lost bilaterally below lesion
Proprioception and light touch are preserved
Posterior cord syndrome
Least frequent syndrome
Injury to posterior columns results in proprioception loss
Pain, temperature, touch preserved
Motor preserved to varying degrees
Conus medullaris syndrome
Injury to sacral cord and lumbar nerve roots resulting in lower extremity motor and sensory loss and areflexive bowel and bladder
Cause equina syndrome
Injury at L1 level and below resulting in s lower motor neuron lesion, flaccid paralysis with no spinal reflex activity, an areflexive bowel and adder
