Psychodynamic
The psychodynamic approach always looks to the past for memories repressed into the unconscious
Theorists

Psychoanalysis
identifying and releasing unconscious, repressed feelings, thoughts, memories, and desires that are negatively impacting your life. The goal is to make you aware of the root of psychological problems and help you resolve the issues in order to bring about positive change and growth.
Cognitive
the cognitive approach examines thoughts, perceptions, and interpretations
The Cognitive Theory
Cognitive theorists believe that our thoughts and actions are a result of the way we see ourselves
Behavioral & Social-Cultural
looks at learned behaviors and responses to stimuli; looks at social norms
Behavioral Theory
believed behavior resulted from an organism’s response to its environment, rather than emerging from the depths of the mind
Sociocultural
believe that psychological problems are caused by social pressure and unrealistic social norms
Humanistic
- uses unconditional positive regard to help get people to their full potential
- attempts to help individual people achieve their full potential
- maintains that all people can reach self-actualization if they are given unconditional positive regard
Biological/Neuropsychological
behavior results from the physical interactions between the mind and the body
Evolutionary
believe there are aspects of human behavior that may have given individuals of their genes a better chance for survival
Psychometrics
The scientific study of the measurement of human abilities, attitudes, and traits
Psychiatrists
Medical doctors who specialize in psychology; can prescribe medication and operate
Clinical
help people with their personal problems, determine whether treatment is needed
Counseling
Advises and assists people with the problems of everyday life, helping with coping
