School-home relationships Flashcards
Take-home activities are most effective if they emphasize what?
hands-on activities that promote interaction between students and parents/guardians; hands-on activities help students become actively involved in learning. Student and parent/guardian interaction enables the parent to help their child think more as a result of asking them questions
To encourage parent engagement, strategies include
using multiple communication methods; providing multiple opportunities that are varied (e.g., open house, coming to the child’s class, and school events); having engagements that are positive, inclusive, and accommodating
What are some ways parents can be actively involved in their child’s education?
volunteering their time to assist the teacher as a teacher’s aide or a tutor; attending fundraisers, PTA meetings, school social events, and family fun nights
How is family involvement important in a child’s education?
Through having a support system and a positive learning community, students may likely develop a positive attitude towards learning, academic achievement, and social and emotional development
To have beneficial interactions with the student’s family, a teacher must consider
family background, family dynamics, work schedules, cultural differences, and values
The purpose of frequently communicating with families is to
inform them of their child’s progress and, if the child is struggling, then they can provide necessary supports as equal contributors to their child’s education
To ensure family conferences are effective, do the following
come on time; ensure the space is inviting; talk about the student’s strenghts; do not criticize the student; share student’s progress and create goals with the parent for the student
One of the best ways to accommodate parent/guardians communication needs is
arranging interpreters during conference and other PTA mtgs
What school initiative would best facilitate the engagement and involvement of parents into their kids’ education?
implementing a system for informing parents about the school’s various programs and getting their input
The most effective strategy to increase family involvement in school-based decisions is
parent-teacher association meetings, because they allows parents to learn about the educational curriculum, address concerns, provide input and share ideas to best meet students’ needs. It also provides an opportunity for families to collaborate with teachers and staff.
