When is delusion deemed bizarre?
Clearly implausible and not understandable to same-culture peers and do not derive from ordinary life experiences I.e,
- thought withdrawal
- thought insertion
- delusions of control
Types of negative symptoms
- Diminished emotional expression
- Avolition (decrease in self-initiated activities)
- anhedonia

Phases of Schizophrenia
• Prodromal Phase -Showing signs of deterioration prior to full blown symptoms • Active Symptoms Phase -Full blown symptoms are present • Residual Phase -Some but not all symptoms remain, similar to prodromal phase
Delusional Disorder Diagnostic Criteria
A. One or more delusion one month or more
B. Criterion A for Schizophrenia has never been met
C. Aside from delusions, there is no markedly
impaired functioning, & behavior is not obviously odd or bizarre
D. If manic or MD episodes have occurred, they are brief relative to the duration of delusions
E. Exclusion

Brieft Psychotic Disorder Diagnostic Criteria
A. One or more of the following sx, with at least one being 1, 2, or 3
1. Delusions
2. Hallucinations
3. Disorganized Speech
4. Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior
B. One day to one month, with full return to premorbid functioning
C. Exclusion
Specifiers for Brief Psychotic Disorder
Specify if: With marked stressor(s) Without marked stressor(s)
With postpartum onset Specify if: With catatonia
Schizophreniform Disorder Diagnostic Criteria
A. Two or more, for a significant portion of the time during a one month period (or less if successfully treated), at least one must be 1, 2, or 3
B. 1 month to 6 months, with provisional if waiting for recovery
C. & D. Exclusions
Specifiers for Schizophreniform Disorder
Specify if: With or Without good prognostic features (page 97 - 2 of 4 needed) Specify if: With catatonia
Schizophrenia Diagnostic Criteria
A. Two or more, for one month, with at least one being 1, 2, or 3 (page 99)
B. Marked decrease in level of functioning previously achieved
C. For at least 6 months that may include prodromal & residual periods

F. If there is a hx of a dx in childhood, this dx may be
given if delusions or hallucinations are prominent
