Neurodevelopmental Disorder Flashcards
What are the 7 categories in the neurodevelopment disorder section?
- Intellectual Disabilities
- Communication Disorders
- Autism Spectrum Disorder
- ADHD Disorder
- Specific Learning Disorder
- Motor Disorders
- Other Neurodevelopmental Disorders
What are the 4 specifier for Intellectual Disability
- Mild
- Moderate
- Severe
- Profound
Global Developmental Delay belongs in which sub category of neurodevelopmental disorder?
Intellectual disabilities
What are the 5 communication disorders?
- Language disorder
- Speech sound disorder
- Childhood-onset fluency Disorder (stuttering)
- Social (pragmatic) communication disorder
- Unspecified communication disorder
What are the three severity specifiers for ASD?
Requiring very substantial support, Requiring substantial support, Requiring support
Additional specifiers, besides severity, to include in ASD diagnoses?
- Associated with known medical/genetic condition/environmental factor
- Associated with another neurodevelopmental/Mental/behavioral disorder
- with or without intellectual impairment
- with or without language impairment
- with Catalonia
Three types of ADHD presentations?
- combined presentation
- predominantly inattentive presentation
- predominantly hyperactive/impulsive presentation
ADHD severity specifiers
Mild, moderate, severe
T/F: ADHD can have a specifier of “in partial remission?
True
Three types of impairments for SLD
- with impairment in reading (dyslexia)
- with impairment in written expression
- with impairment in mathematics (dyscalculia)
5 Tic Disorders
- Tourette’s
- Oersistent (chronic) motor or vocal Tic disorder
- Provisional Tic Disorder
- other specified Tic disorder
- unspecified Tic disorder
When do neurodevelopmental disorders typically have an onset period?
Developmental period
4 settings impairments occur with Neurodevelopmental Disorder
- personal
- social
- academic
- occupational
Diagnostic Criteria for ID
A. Deficits in intellectual fxns confirmed by assessment & individualized/standardized intelligence tests
B. Deficits in adaptive fxning=failure to meet developmental&socio-culrural standards for personal independence and social responsibility.
C. Onset during developmental period
3 domains of ID
Conceptual, social, practical
When is global developmental delay diagnosed?
- under 5yrs
- clinical severity level cannot be reliably assessed
- have failed to meet developmental milestones in several areas of intellectual fxning
ASD criteria A&B severity based on what?
Social communication impairments & restricted, repetitive patterns of bx
Diagnostic Criteria for ASD
A. Persistent deficits in social communication & social interactions across mx contexts (currently/historically)
B. Restricted, repetitive patterns of bx, interests, or activities as manifested by >=2
-repetitive motor movements, use of objects, speech
-insistence on sameness
-fixated interests abnormal in intensity/focus
-hyper/hypo sensory input
C. Present in early developmental period
D. Symptoms cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas.
E. Exclusions
ADHD Diagnostic Criteria
A. Pattern of inattention (6+) &/ hyperactivity-impulsivity (6+) interferes w/ fxning or development lasting at least 6 months
*17yr+ need 5+
B. Sx present before 12yrs
C. Present in 2x settings
D. Sx interfere w/ social, academic, occupational fx
E. Exclusions
For intellectual disability, what are levels of severity based on?
Adaptive functioning NOT IQ
Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder
A. Difficulties in verbal & non-verbal social communication, with all 4 criterion (page 47-48)
B. Functional impairments in effective communication, social participation, social relationships, academic achievement, occupational performance, individually or in combination
C. Onset is early developmental period but not fully manifested until social demands exceed capacities
D. Exception - Rule out medical &/or mental disorders
Treatments for Autism
Early Intervention
Applied Behavioral Analysis Sensory-Based Activities Family Therapy
Social Skills Training
Job Skills Training
What age do symptoms need to be present by in order to diagnose with ADHD?
12
Specific learning disorder diagnostic criteria
A. Difficulty learning and applying academic skills, needing 1 of 6 symptoms, for 6 months, despite interventions to target the symptoms.
B. Academic skills are substantially below chronological age & cause significant interference with academic/occupational performance.
C. Began during school-age years but may not be manifested until demands exceed limited capacity.
D. Exclusion
Objectives of treatment for Neurodevelopment disorders
- Eliminate dysfunctional behavior
- Improve academic functioning
- Improve socialization and peer-group involvement
- Promote family understanding of the disorder
- Improve parenting and family functioning
