Criteria for diagnosis of schizophrenia
What does the DSM-5 list as the criteria for having schizophrenia?
- Symptoms
- Duration
- Social and occupational dysfunctions
- Exclusion of certain mood disorders ( bipolar, depressive disorder)
What are positive Schizophrenia symptoms? What is the most common?
Delusions
Hallucinations - most common as auditory
What are cognitive schizophrenia symptoms?
- Thought disorders
- Movement disorders/ catanoia
What are negative schizophrenia symptoms?
Q. Emotional numbness
2. Difficulty communicating
3. Social withdrawal
4. Lack of general care or personal hygiene
What is the basic criteria for a schizophrenia diagnosis?
- 2 or more symptoms for at least 1 month with 1 of the symptoms being delusions, hallucinations or disorganized speech
- Some evidence of the disorder for 6 consistent months
- Changes in life or social environment dysfunction
- Must rule out depressive and bipolar disorder and not caused by medication use or abuse
