Why is diagnosing schizophrenia difficult?
No single symptom is present solely in schizophrenia and never in another illness.
List the four symptoms of Schizophrenia
Hallucinations, Delusions, Neologisms, Loose Associations
Describe Hallucinations
Sensory perceptions without a stimulus.
Usually auditory
Tend to start nice and helpful, then degenerate, becoming mean and degrading
Describe delusions
False beliefs or misinterpretations of events and their significance
Define Neologisms
Sufferer makes up words meaningful to them but to no one else
Loose Associations
Sufferer talks about one thing then drifts off on a train of thought that listener finds hard to follow
What are the three kinds of Schizophrenia
Disorganized, catatonic, paranoid.
Define disorganized schizophrenia
-Disorganized thinking (think in illogical nonsensical thought patterns such as neologisms and loose association)
-Grossly disorganized behavior
(Affects everyday tasks such as bathing, dressing, caring for others)
