what is schizophrenia
a disorder characterized by deteriorating personality and psychosocial functioning
long term inability to tell what is real and not real
onset
late adolescents to early adulthood
cause
unknown but can be influenced by altered brain chemistry, genetics or family Hx, environmental stress, substance abuse
what are positive symptoms
experiencing things that shouldn’t be there
what are negative symptoms
lack of symptoms that should be there
examples of positive symptoms
hallucination
delusions
disorganized thinking
examples of negative symptoms
flat or blunted affect
isolation or apathy
anergia or anhedonia
reduced speech
physical symptoms
catatonia (change in muscle activity) catatonic stupor (motionless) or excitatory (restless)
diagnostic
2 or more symptoms (1 has to be a positive symptom) for at least 1 month and 6 month of continual disturbance of physical symptoms
medication
antipsychotics
medication for acute phase
antipsychotics or benzo’s
