Q

What did Christopher Firth et al idnetify?

A

2 kinds of “dysfunctional thought processing” that could underline some symptoms.

17
Q

What were the two kinds of dysfucntional thought processigng?

A

Lack of Central control

Meta-representation

18
Q

What is central control?

A

cognitive ability to suppress automatic responses whilst we perform deliberate ones instead.

19
Q

What might result from the inability to supress automatic thoughts?

A

Disorganised speech and thought disorder.

20
Q

The stroop test

A

Schizophrenics struggle with the stroop test as they cannot repress the urge to say the word, suggesting they cannot suppress automatic processing. On average they take 3x longer.

21
Q

What is meta representation?

A

Ability to reflect on our own thoughts and behaviour.

22
Q

What does meta representation do?

A

Gives us insight into our own goals.

Also allows us to interpret others actions.

23
Q

What does a dysfunction in meta representation do?

A

disrupts our ability to recognise our own actions and thoughts, AS our own. This can explain hallucinations and thought insertion in schizophrenics.
