Schacter and Singer Flashcards
What was the background of the experiment?
it has been shown that we look to our environment and previous cognitions for explanations for physical arousal
What was the aim of the experiment?
to investigate whether having an explanation for state of arousal affects the extent to which a model can influence mood
What was the research method used in the experiment?
lab experiment
What was the sample used in the experiment?
130-something participants from uni of cal?
What was the sampling technique used in the experiment?
volunteer sample
What was the experimental design used in the experiment?
independent measures
What were the controls used in the experiment?
same instructions
What was the task in the experiment?
participants given same instructions in lab - suproxin to test effect of vitamin supplements on vision, given epinephrine except placebo, split into informed, misinformed, ignorant, informed told real effects (heart racing, shaking, sweating), misinformed told fake (itching, numbness, headache), ignorant told no effect, further split into euphoria and anger (no misinformed in anger), euphoria got injection, experimenter left room, stooge waited few mins then did routine (playing with hula hoop, throwing paper, asking others to join), in anger, told to wait 20 mins and complete questionnaire, stooge made increasingly angry comments (to hell with this, im done), pulse checked, completed self reports, debriefing
What were the variables used in the experiment?
iv - the condition participants were in
dv - answers on self report, pulse
What were the ethical issues in the experiment?
deception, not informed consent, distress
What were the results of the experiment?
informed were least happy and least angry, then misinformed then ignorant, higher pulse rate
What were the conclusions drawn from the experiment?
if person is aroused and do not have explanation they will look to environment to label
What were the strengths of the experiment?
qualitative and quantitative, high control, standardisation, generalisability?
What were the weaknesses of the experiment?
ethics, extraneous/participant variables, nothing to compare to
What are the real-world applications of the experiment?
help to deal with anxiety
