What are the objectives of the Scene designer?
- Help set the tone and style of the production.
- Establish the locale and period in which the play takes place.
- Develop a design concept consistent with the director’s concept.
- Provide a central image or metaphor, where appropriate.
- Ensure that scenery is coordinated with other production elements.
- Solve practical design problems.

What is a scene designer?
The scene designer creates the visual world in which a play unfolds. Together with the playwright and the director, the scene designer determines whether a scene is
realistic or in the realm of fantasy.
Define ‘Ground plan’.
Ground plan: A blueprint or floor plan of the stage indicating the placement of scenery, furniture, doors and windows, and the various levels of the stage, as well as the walls of rooms, platforms, etc.
Define ‘fly loft”.
Fly loft: Space above the stage where scenery may be lifted out of sight by ropes and pulleys.
Define ‘rendering’.
Rendering: A complete drawing of a set, usually in color.
In theatre, what does style refer to?
-how a playwrights uses language.
-how scenery looks.
-how actors portray characters.
-the way in which a work is done.
What are the challenges a designer might face on an arena stage?
- Seneries aren’t as straightforward as some of the audience members may not be able to see it.
- Big props may block the view of some audience members.
- It’s harder to hide speakers on an arena stage.( technical elements cannot be easily concealed on an arena stage)
