Viv says ‘out damned spot’ as she is cleaning the carpet
-Viv ‘Out out damned spot’ as she is cleaning the carpet - Enid replies ‘eh’ which shows that despite living her longer she has no idea about English culture. (Shows how Enid knows nothing about British culture)
-Viv tells her it is ‘Shakespeare’ which clearly shows the cultural conflict as it is clear that Viv is learning about English literature at school but Enid has no idea who Shakespeare even is.
-This shows the divide between the elder and younger generation.
Brod and Enid refrences to ‘evil spirit’ and ‘devil’
-Shows how much they beleive in the Obeah traditions
‘She doesnt understand that way of life’
Enid to Brod - telling him not to bother to inform Viv and Brod about their previous life
‘Jamaican passport’ ‘nationality secure’
p.28 - Brod and Enid discuss nationality and becoming British citizens and Brod comments he will have to keep his ‘Jamaican passport’ as he does not think his nationality will ever be ‘secure’.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUNGER AND OLDER GENERATION

Enid says ‘no one back home goes to university’
-Shows how proud she is that Viv is accomplished
-Shows that everything she did for her daughters pays off
‘Imperialism’, ‘Nationalism’, ‘Vampirism’
-Brod lectures about these things which show how much he is in hatred with the British empire
Enid says ‘proud of my English girls’
Brod says ‘These girls have Carribean souls’
-Brod beleives that the girls are Carribean
-Enid beleives that the girls are British

-Brod is shocked that despite how intelligent and high achieving by they do not know or haven’t been taught about
-‘Nanny de Maroon’ one of the most important Jamaican figures.
Brod says ‘she want better for you’
Great conversation between Brod and Viv about Enid
- Brod says ‘she want better for you’ showing how desperate Enid is for her daughters to have the best possible chances in life - really shows the immigrant experience.
Del hasn’t been going to work
-The audience discovers that Del hasn’t been going to work.
-Enid is concerned and Del is rude to her, Enid says she is worried that people will think that they are ‘lazy’ if Del doesn’t look for another job tomorrow.
Del to Enid ‘ you are too busy bowing and scraping to your beloved England’.
-Shows that Del doesn’t think England isn’t that great
-Knows that her mother isn’t treated very well here
-Doesn’t understand why Enid loves England even though she is not treated very well
