Scene 4 Flashcards
What does Blanche want to do in Scene 4?
Blanche wants to contact Shep Hutleigh to get some money so she can leave town with her sister, Stella.
Who is Shep Huntleigh and how is he used in the play ?
Shep Huntleigh is one of Blanches ex-lovers and is used by Williams to represent her desire for love and companionship.
How is Stanley seen as childish in Scene 4?
Stanley is shown to be childish at the end of Scene 4 when Stella hugs him in front of Blanche and “he grins through the curtains at her.” In this moment Stanley is almost wielding Stella as a prize he’s just won and is bragging to Blanche about it.
What does Blanche think of Stanley at this point?
Blanche thinks that Stanley is “bestial” and that he “acts like an animal”.
How are we lead to believe Stella enjoys Stanleys aggressive nature?
Williams causes us to believe that Stella enjoys Stanleys brutish behaviour as at the beginning of the scene she has woken up after having sex with Stanley the night before and she doesn’t seem to be bothered about Stanley abusing her the day before evidenced in the beginning Stage Directions “her eyes…of Eastern Idols.”
