Scene 11 Flashcards
STELLA
“I couldn’t believe her story and go on living with Stanley.”
“Oh, my God, Eunice, Help me! Don’t let them do that to her, don’t let them hurt her! Oh, God, oh, please God, don’t hurt her! …[she tries to break from Eunice’s arms]
“What have I done to my sister? Oh, God what have I done to my sister?”
MITCH
“MITCH [wildly] You! You done this, all o’ your God damn interfering with things you—”
“MITCH: I’ll kill you! [he lunges and strikes at STANLEY.]”
STANLEY
“STANLEY: You left nothing here but spilt talcum and old empty bottles – unless it’s the paper lantern you want to take with you. You want the lantern? [He crosses to dressing table and seizes the paper lantern, tearing it off the lightbulb and extends it towards her. She cries out as if the lantern was herself. The MATRON steps boldly towards her. She screams and tries to break past the MATRON…]”
“STANLEY [voluptuously, soothingly]: Now, honey. Now, love. Now, now love. [He kneels beside her and his fingers find the opening of her blouse.] Now, now, love. Now, love…”
Blanche
I’m anxious to get out of here - this place is a trap!
“Whoever you are - I have always depended on the kindness of strangers”
“Child in her arms. It is wrapped in a pale blue blanket”
Steve
“The game is seven card stud”
Stud poker
Each player receives seven cards dealt two facedown and one face up in the first round. One faceup on each of the next three rounds, and one facedown on the last round with betting following each round and a final showdown in which a player selects five of his cards as his poker hand
Seven Card Stud, with its minimum amount of players, two, Stanley and Blanche, also participating though not playing is Stella, the dealer.
Initially:
Blanche has been dealt what appears to her to be a winning hand Stanley has an okay hand
They each have been dealt two cards face down, and one face up. The face-up cards are all that the other knows about them.
The two cards down are their capabilities, past, cunning, and all else that the other doesn’t know such as Blanche is unaware of Stanley’s cunning predator side, and Stanley doesn’t yet know of Blanche’s past.
Blanche’s unexpected arrival and openness allow her the high face-up card. So she makes Stella the prize that Stanley and she are battling for.
Stanley and Blanche are dealt their next card at the poker party. And they both reveal their ‘highest’ hand. Stanley basically learns nothing but Blanche learns about Stanley’s drunken behaviors. Again Blanche bets first and adds Mitch into the kitty.
With his wife and his friend on the line, Stanley steps up his game. And then as the face-up cards are dealt, Blanche accidentally shows her hand, thinking in her that the game was the shorter, old south version of Five card stud.
Stanley who was holding back his highest cards, used them. He reveals his hand at the final deal. And there is nothing she could do about it.
