Scenarios Flashcards
Routes of hydration
- Oral
- Nasogastric tube
- IV
Why don’t we give sugary drinks?
They don’t hydrate the child. Sugary drinks make the child more thirsty.
What types of CPR is given for different age groups?
Children are given 15 compressions to two breaths (15:2).
- Two fingers used for compressions for infants
- One hand is used for small children
- Two hands are used for teens/young adults and adults
Discretion needs to be made so that compressions are only being made 1/3 of the way down the chest.
What form of compressions are used for a 6 month old?
Two fingers or one hand compressions 1/3 of the depth of the chest
What form of compressions are used for an 8 year old?
One hand or two hand compressions depending on the child’s size. 1/3 of the depth of the child’s chest.
A child collapses and is unresponsive, what would you do?
Call for help.
- DR ABCDE
- Reassure the child and mother.
- Focus on maintaining an airway
What is a burette and why do we use them on children?
A burette is a small chamber attached to an IV that allows small amount of medication to be administered at a time. Once the burette is empty, the medication stops.
This is more effective and accurate in children.
How may you be able to distract a child while inserting and securing an IV?
- Play games on the opposite side.
- Sing
- Get them to talk to you
- Get a toy out
