What is the role of the RN during and after the birthing process?
A
The RN is required to take care of the mother and baby before, during and after the birthing process.
Before
- Reassurance of the mother and father
- Making sure the mother is comfortable
- Talking the mother through her concerns
- Making sure the mother isn’t in too much pain
After
- Creating a care plan
- Educating the new parents

What exam is performed on the newborn infant?
A
Newborn screening test - A prick on the heel - Tests for any medical conditions that were undetectable before birth - i.e. Cystic Fibrosis Hearing screening test

What medications are given to the mother and infant?
A
Newborn
- Vitamin K
- To help with blood clotting - Hepatitis C shot
Mother
- Analgesia

What is the placenta examined for?
A
Any tears, missing parts, abnormalities

What nursing care is the mother provided with after giving birth?
A
- Regular vitals
- Checks to see if your uterus is contracting normally by applying pressure
- Wound care (if tearing or C-Section takes place)
- Education on your baby, breastfeeding and hygiene after giving birth
- Reassurance and checks that you are coping well after the events
