What is the role of the RN during and after the birthing process?

A

The RN is required to take care of the mother and baby before, during and after the birthing process.

Before

  • Reassurance of the mother and father
  • Making sure the mother is comfortable
  • Talking the mother through her concerns
  • Making sure the mother isn’t in too much pain

After

  • Creating a care plan
  • Educating the new parents

What exam is performed on the newborn infant?

A
Newborn screening test
- A prick on the heel 
- Tests for any medical conditions that were undetectable before birth
          - i.e. Cystic Fibrosis

What medications are given to the mother and infant?

A

Newborn

  • Vitamin K
    - To help with blood clotting
  • Hepatitis C shot

- Analgesia

A

Any tears, missing parts, abnormalities

What nursing care is the mother provided with after giving birth?

A
  • Regular vitals
  • Checks to see if your uterus is contracting normally by applying pressure
  • Wound care (if tearing or C-Section takes place)
  • Education on your baby, breastfeeding and hygiene after giving birth
  • Reassurance and checks that you are coping well after the events
