SCD - older people Flashcards
Patients with what 3 neurological conditions fall into the ‘at risk’ category?
- Stroke
- Parkinson’s disease
- Dementia
What is a stroke?
A cerebrovascular accident (CVA) resulting in a sudden or rapidly progressing neurological defect
List 4 physical effects of a stroke:
- Unilateral numbness/weakness on contra-lateral side of affected part of brain
- Communication and swallowing (dysphagia) difficulties
- Hemiplegia - partial or complete paralysis of one side of the body
- Loss of function of affected area of brain
List 4 risk factors of developing a stroke:
- Increased BP
- Increased cholesterol levels
- Smoking and alcohol
- High salt/fat diet
How long after a stroke should patient wait to undergo dental treatment?
6 months
When is aspiration pneumonia more prevalent?
In presence of poor oral hygiene as dental plaque becomes a reservoir for respiratory pathogens
Give 4 reasons why root surface caries can develop after a stroke:
- Xerostomia is a side effect of anti-hypertensive or anti-depressant medication
- Impaired ability to maintain good OH - increase in plaque accumulation
- Decreased oral clearance (food)
- Dietary changes due to dysphagia
Why should patients who have had a stroke be sat up slowly?
Due to postural hypertension
Explain the 3 cardinal signs of Parkinson’s disease:
- Dyskinesia
- Bradykinesia
- Akinesia
- Dyskinesia = tremor or involuntary movement
- Bradykinesia = slow movement
- Akinesia = muscular rigidity
List 5 oral manifestations as a result of Parkinson’s Disease:
- Xerostomia - decreased quality/quantity of saliva
- Burning mouth - levodopa medication
- Root caries - high calorie supplements to maintain weight
- Dysphagia
- Drooling
List 3 causes of dementia:
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Alcohol
- Nutritional deficiencies
List 4 symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease:
- Memory loss
- Language deterioration
- Indifferent attitude
- Impaired visuo-spatial skills
List 3 oral complications in Alzheimer’s patients:
- More dental plaque - increased caries
- Poor periodontal condition
- Poor oral and denture hygiene
List 4 indications that might suggest patients who are cognitively impaired are experiencing oral pain:
- Refusal to eat certain foods
- Increased drooling
- Leaving dentures out of mouth
- Constant pulling at the face
What are the 5 categories of elder abuse?
- Neglect
- Physical abuse
- Psychological abuse
- Financial abuse
- Sexual abuse
