What is safeguarding?
The recognition and prevention of abusive behaviour in practice
What year was the Human Rights Act passed?
What does the act define?
HRA = 1998
Defines role of the state (police, NHS, social services etc.) and organisations carrying out ‘functions of a public nature’ in promoting and protecting our rights
What is the aim of the Mental Capacity Act, 2005?
Aims to ensure individuals aged 16 and over maintain ownership of their decisions
Wilful neglect or ill treatment of a person lacking capacity is a criminal offence
The Health and Social Care Act, 2008 and Care Quality Commission, 2009 aim to do what?

List 4 physical signs of physical abuse:
- Bruising
- Finger marks
- Fearful of a person
- Unexplained and inconsistent explanations
What is institutional abuse?
Repeated incidences of poor care or ill-treatment of vulnerable adults in a paid and/or regulated care setting
List 3 signs of potential sexual abuse:
- Bruising or injury to intimate areas
- Genital or urine infections
- Changes in behaviour
Define ‘Honour Based Violence’:
A crime or incident which has been committed to protect or defend the honour of the family and or community
What is a forced marriage an abuse of?

If you are concerned about someone but have no evidence to suggest they are being abused, what 3 things are good practice to do?
- Show concern for the individual’s welfare by asking how they are and how they got a bruise
- Continue to monitor the situation - record any changes in behaviour
- Discuss the situation with your Safeguarding Lead
What are the 4 R’s when someone discloses abuse to you?

Do NOT ask any further questions, you are NOT being asked to prove that information is true
Who must we report an at risk patient to?
All reports of abuse must be reported to the Safeguarding Lead
If you feel your Safeguarding Lead has no responded appropriately, what must you do?
Escalate your concerns within your own organisation
What does the Public Interest Disclosure Act, 1999 provide?
Provides legal protection from dismissal and harassment for whistle-blowers
