25
The following fire gases are the primary cause of fire death, due to toxic gas inhalation SCBA-Chp 1-Respiratory Protection Page 2
Carbon monoxide (CO) Carbon dioxide (CO2) Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) Sulfure Dioxide (SO2) Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN) Hydrogen Chloride (HO) Phosgene (COCI2)
26
What is the color, odor, flammability and weight of Carbon Monoxide: SCBA-Chp 1-Respiratory Protection Page 3
colorless odorless flammable slightly lighter than air
27
If there is oxygen available present for the combustion process what happens to the production of Carbon Monoxide? SCBA-Chp 1-Respiratory Protection Page 3
Carbon monoxide decreases Carbon dioxide increases
28
If there is a smoldering oxygen-deficient fire for the combustion process, what happens to the production of Carbon Monoxide? SCBA-Chp 1-Respiratory Protection Page 3
Carbon monoxide increases Carbon dioxide decreases
29
Explain the signs of symptoms of Carbon Monoxide at each level When do you don SCBA SCBA-Chp 1-Respiratory Protection Page 3

31
What is the color, odor, flammability, production process and the effect on the body of Carbon Dioxide: SCBA-Chp 1-Respiratory Protection Page 3
-Colorless -odorless -nonflammable gas -produced by the combustion process -Increases the rate of respirations due to CO2 from the blood stream into the lungs stimulating the respiratory center of the brain.
32
Explain the signs & symptoms of Carbon Dioxide and properties SCBA-Chp 1-Respiratory Protection Page 3
Normal at 300ppm .03% 5,000ppm .5%; there is a marked increase in respiration, along with dizzineess, sweating and mental excitement 100,000ppm to 200,000ppm 10% to 20% may cause death within a few minutes due to paralysis of the respiratory center in the brain
33
Explain the signs & symptoms of Hydrogen Sulfide and properties SCBA-Chp 1-Respiratory Protection Page 3
-incomplete combustion of material from living things: rubber, wool, hair -colorless gas -rotten eggs -heavier than air -corrosive, flammable and explosive -very poisonous, affects the nervous system -causes rapid breathing rate followed by complete respiratory collapse
34

45
What happens when carbon monoxide displaces oxygen in the body SCBA-Chp 1-Respiratory Protection Page 6
-Carbon dioxide starts to build up in the blood stream -causes increased depth and frequency of inhalations when carbon dioxide reaches brain
46
Unless the incident area is immediately and thoroughly ventilated or the unprotected person leaves the contaminated area at once the following could take place SCBA-Chp 1-Respiratory Protection Page 6
-The exposed, unprotected person will start to feel dizzy, and their vision will become blurred. -With CO and CO2 levels increasing, the color of their blood will change from red to blue due to the lack of oxygen -Shortly after unconsciousness occurs, heart muscle will start to weaken, death will occur due to respiratory collapse or heart failure

What happens when Buddy Breathing is conducted between two SCBA's SCBA-Chp 2-SCBA, PAK Tracker and HHR Specifications Page 56
-If it's due to low air -Both users vibralert will activate upon initial connection -An Automatic switch in the Pressure reducer diverts use of air to the cylinder with the lowest pressure -The lower cylinder will be depleted (less than 500psi). At 500 psi both users will breath from the 'rescue' bottle -Once the bottle falls below 25% 1000-1200psi both vibralerts will activate
