How is scarlet fever spread
A
It is spread via the respiratory route by inhalation or ingestion

Presentation
A
Fever: 24-48 hrs
Malaise, headache, nausea/vomiting
Sore throat
Strawberry tongue
Rash: Sandpaper texture

Diagnosis
A
Throat swab should be taken but commence antibiotics immediately

Management:
A
Oral penicillin for 10 days
Azithromycin for penicillin allergic patients
Can return back to school 24 hours after starting antibiotics

Complications
A
Otitis media is the most common
Rheumatic fever: 20 days after infection
Acute glomerulonephritis: 10 days after infection
