Scapular region Flashcards
Trapezius innervation
Spinal accessory nerve (CNXI) and C3, C4 spinal nerves
Trapezius action
Descending part elevates; ascending part depresses; and middle part retracts scapula; descending and ascending parts act together to rotate glenoid cavity superiorly
Latissimus Dorsi innervation
Thoracodorsal nerve
Latissimus Dorsi action
Extends, adducts and medially rotates humerus; raises body toward arms during climbing
Levator Scapulae innervation
Dorsal scapular nerve and C3, C4 spinal nerves
Levator Scapulae action
Elevates scapula and rotates glenoid cavity inferiorly by rotating scapula
Rhomboid Major/Minor innervation
Dorsal scapular nerve
Rhomboid Major/Minor action
Retract scapula and rotate glenoid cavity inferiorly; fix scapula to thoracic wall
Serratus Anterior innervation
Long thoracic nerve
Serratus Anterior action
Protracts scapula and holds it against thoracic wall; rotates scapula
Deltoid innervation
Axillary nerve
Deltoid action
Clavicular (anterior) part: flexes and medially rotates arm; Acromial (middle) part: abducts arm; Spinal (posterior) part: extends and laterally rotates arm
Supraspinatus innervation
Suprascapular nerve
Supraspinatus action
Initiates and assists deltoid in abduction of arm and acts with rotator cuff muscles
Infraspinatus innervation
Suprascapular nerve
Infraspinatus action
Laterally rotates arm; acts with rotator cuff muscles
Teres Major innervation
Lower subscapular nerve
Teres Major action
Adducts and medially rotates arm
Teres Minor innervation
Axillary nerve
Teres Minor action
Laterally rotates arm; acts with rotator cuff muscles
Triceps Brachii innervation
Radial nerve
Triceps Brachii action
Chief extensor of forearm; long head resists dislocation of humerus (especially important during adduction)
Subscapularis innervation
Upper and lower subscapular nerves
Subscapularis action
Medially rotates arm; as part of rotator cuff, helps hold head of humerus in glenoid cavity
Trapezius arterial supply
Superficial transverse cervical artery
Rhomboids arterial supply
Deep transverse cervical artery/dorsal scapular artery
Levator scapulae arterial supply
deep transverse cervical artery/dorsal scapular artery
Latissmus dorsi arterial supply
thoracodorsal artery
Pectoralis Major innervation
Lateral and medial pectoral nerves
Pectoralis Major action
Adducts and medially rotates humerus; draws scapula anteriorly and inferiorly; acting alone-clavicular head flexes humerus and sternocostal head extends it from the flexed position
Pectoralis Minor innervation
Medial pectoral nerve
Pectoralis Minor action
Stabilizes scapula drawing it inferiorly and anteriorly against thoracic wall
Subclavius innervation
Nerve to subclavius
Subclavius action
Anchors and depresses clavicle
The superior thoracic artery supplies
Travels anteromedially along the superior border of pectoralis major
1st and 2nd intercostal spaces
Subclavius
Superior portion of serratus anterior
The thoracoacromial artery (trunk) branches into
Pectoral
Deltoid
Acromial
Clavicular
The thoracoacromial artery supplies
The 1st and 2nd intercostal spaces
The lateral thoracic artery supplies
Descends along the lateral thoracic wall
Pectoral
Serratus anterior
Intercostal muscles
Lateral aspect of the breast
The subscapular artery divides into
Circumflex scapular
Thoracodorsal
The circumflex scapular artery supplies
Muscles on the dorsum of the scapula
Part of scapular anastomosis
The thoracodorsal artery supplies
Latissimus dorsi
The anterior circumflex humeral artery
Smaller of two branches
Passes laterally
The posterior circumflex humeral artery
Larger or the two
Passes medially to posterior wall via quadrangular space
Travels with axillary nerve
The circumflex humeral artery supplies
Deltoid
Teres major/minor
Long head of triceps
Axillary nerve (C5-C6)
Sensory innervation of upper lateral arm
deltoid and teres major
Musculocutaneous nerve (C5-C7)
Sensory innervation of lateral aspect of forearm
Biceps brachii, coracobrachialis, brachialis
Radial nerve (C5-T1)
Sensory innervation of posterior and infernolateral arm, posterior forearm, and dorsum of hand
Innervates all muscles of posterior compartment of arm and forearm
Median nerve (C6-T1)
Motor to forearm and hand (except flexor carpi ulnar is and ulnar half of flexor digitorum profundus)
Sensory to lateral palmar skin
Ulnar nerve
motor to forearm and hand (flexor carpi ulnaris and half of flexor digitorum profundus)
Sensory to medial 1.5 digits and medial aspect of hand
Sternocleidomastoid innervation
Spinal accessory nerve (CN XI)
Sternocleidomastoid action
Unilateral contraction: laterally rotates head to ipsilateral side and rotates it so face is turned superiorly toward contralateral side; Bilateral contraction: extends neck at atlanto-occipital joints, flexes cervical vertebrae so that chin approches manubrium, or extends vertebrae while flexing inferior vertebrae so chin is thrust forward with head kept level; with cervical vertebrae fixed, may elevate manubrium and medial ends of clavicles assisting pump-handle action of deep respiration
Platysma innervation
Facial nerve (CN VII)
Platysma action
Depresses mandible (against resistance); tenses skin of inferior face and neck
