Dorian Mode
Second note of the major scale; 3rd and 7th down 1/2 step
Phrygian Mode
Third note of the major scale; 2,3,6,7 down 1/2 step
Lydian Mode
Fourth note of the major scale; 4th up 1/2 step
Mixolydian Mode
Fifth note of the major scale; 7th down 1/2 step
Aeolian Mode
Sixth note of the major scale; aka natural minor; 3, 6, 7 down 1/2 step
Locrian Mode
Seventh note of the major scale; 2,3,5,6,7 down 1/2 step
Natural minor scale
contains all sharps or flats from the minor key signature with the same name
Harmonic minor scale
raise the seventh note of the natural minor scale a 1/2 step, making the 7th a leading tone
Melodic minor scale
raising 6th and 7th while ascending and returning them to natural minor (lowering them) while descending
Chromatic scale
includes all twelve pitches; using sharps while ascending and flats while descending
Scale
organized sequence of notes upon which a composition is based
Ionian Mode
aka Major scale
Whole tone scale
consists entirely of whole steps; missing one letter name when writing the scale on the staff
