SC8 Flashcards
What is the test for hydrogen?
a lit splint held near hydrogen should make a squeaky pop sound
What is the general reaction metal carbonate + acid?
metal carbonate + acid —> metal oxide + carbon dioxide
What is the test for carbon dioxide?
carbon dioxide in limewater should turn it from clear to cloudy
What happens when two solutions containing soluble salts react?
the metal takes each other’s salts
What is the test for water?
anhydrous copper sulphate should be white and turns blue at the contact of water
What are spectator ions?
ions that do not change in a reaction
What does pH stand for?
power of hydrogen
What is the equation of concentration?
mass(g)/ volume(dm^3)
What is the difference in concentration of hydrogen ions per pH level?
hydrogen ions increase by ten fold as pH gets lower
What are strong acids with examples
strong acids dissociate completely thus tend to form higher concentrations
an example of a strong acid is HCl
What are weak acids with examples
weak acids don’t dissociate completely thus tend to form lower concentrations and are often used in reversible reactions
example is ethanoic acid
What are bases?
pH8+ and reacts with acids for a neutralisation reaction
What type of substance are all metal oxides?
bases
What is the general reaction of neutralisation of metal oxides?
metal oxide + acid —> salt + water
How are soluble salts produced?
filtration and evaporation
