Q

What are esters?

A

A homologous series with a ‘fruity smell’. They are found naturally
in fruits but are artificially made on a large scale from the reaction of
carboxylic acids with alcohols

Q

What are the properties of esters?

A

Are immiscible (do not mix) with water. Are volatile
(have a low boiling point so evaporate easily, hence the reason why we can smell them easily)

Q

How are polyesters made?

A

made by condensation polymerisation in which the
monomers join together and eliminate a small molecule, e.g. watery
