SC10 - Ion Tests and Nanomaterials Flashcards
For which ions do you use a flame test?
Lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium
For which ions do you add sodium hydroxide?
Copper, calcium, aluminium, iron (II), iron (III)
What is the test for lithium ions?
Flame test - crimson flame
What is the test for sodium ions?
Flame test - yellow flame
What is the test for potassium ions?
Flame test - lilac flame
What is the test for calcium ions?
Flame test - orange-red flame
What is the test for copper ions?
Add sodium hydroxide - blue precipitate forms
What is the test for aluminium ions?
Add sodium hydroxide - white precipitate forms (dissolves when excess NaOH added)
What is the test for calcium ions?
Add sodium hydroxide - white precipitate forms (does not dissolve when excess NaOH added)
What is the test for iron (II) ions?
Add sodium hydroxide - green precipitate forms
What is the test for iron (III) ions?
Add sodium hydroxide - brown precipitate forms
What is the test for carbonate ions?
Add dilute acid - bubbles of gas which turn limewater cloudy
What is the test for sulphate ions?
Add barium chloride with hydrochloric acid - white precipitate forms
What is the test for chloride ions?
Add silver nitrate with nitric acid - white precipitate forms
What is the test for bromide ions?
Add silver nitrate with nitric acid - cream precipitate forms
