what is an atom

A

Atoms are very small particles made up of a electrons orbiting a nucleus. The nucleus is made out of protons and neutrons. Protons, Neutrons and Electrons are called subatomic particles. ‘Subatomic’ means ‘inside the atom’.

what are ionic compounds

A

formed by the loss and gain of electrons they are held together by string electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions.

these strong ionic bonds allow ‘billions’ of ions to be packed together in a regular repeating arrangement called a lattice structure
