Q

how would you make a soluble salt from an alkali

A
  1. perform titration experiment with indicator to determine exact volume of acid and alkali to be mixed
  2. repeat without and indicator
  3. evaporate h20 until crystals start forming
    4.filter of crystals

Q

how would you make an insoluble salt

A
  1. mix a nitrate of the metal and a soluble solution and a soluble salt of the non metal in the participate
2.filter out the insoluble salt and wash it several times with a deionised water.

Q

what are characteristics of short chain hydrocarbons

A

small number of carbon atoms
Shorter hydrocarbon molecules have weaker intermolecular forces and lower boiling points. They are highly volatile and therefore extremely flammable.

Q

what happens in the fractional distillation of crude oils

A

During the fractional distillation of crude oil:
heated crude oil enters a tall
fractionating column or tower, which is hot at the bottom and gets cooler towards the top vapours from the oil rise through the column vapours condense when they become cool enough liquids are led out of the column at different heights
The shortest hydrocarbons have very low boiling points. They do not condense, but leave the column in the gas state.

7
Q

what are characteristics of long chain hydrocarbons

A

large number of carbon atoms
The longest hydrocarbons have very high boiling points. They leave the column as a hot liquid called bitumen.
