SC and Impulsivity Flashcards
1
Q
Define Impulsivity
A
- Thinking and acting out of control, on a whim, irrationally with little thought to the future or potential consequences. Thinking in the short-term (Barrett, 1994)
- Benefits include: feeling a sense of life and freedom! (Carver, 2015)
- However: Can lead to the violation of social norms and interpersonal disputes, work and health adversity, and losing track of goals (Carver, 2015).

Q
Impulsivity and C
A
Is it the same thing?
- Analysing the FFM and Impulsivity with life outcomes (Hair and Hampson, 2005) found that Impulsivity still predicted outcomes when C was excluded.
- C and Impulsivity correlated -.69
- Impulsivity increased the total explained variance than just FFM. Suggesting that lower-order factors should be considered as they can aid in accurately predicting behavioural outcomes of personality.

Q
Ego-control
A
Impulsiveness can be explained using Freuds (1932) theory of personality.
The id (animalistic and primal wants) is moderated by the ego (reality), and further moderated by the superior and moral; superego.
Undercontrol (Impulsivity) may be a result of the id overriding. This is ego-control (similar concept to self-control)

Q
Block (1968)
A
Studied 14 year old children. After each session he offered them $4, or, if they waited to be paid, they could receive a bonus.
Those who waited had better ego-control (overriding the id; money + greed) for the more valuable reward (reality; ego). This is also delayed gratification.
