SC and Grit Flashcards

1
Q

Define Grit (3)

A

Determination to achieve goals, overcoming obstacles, long-term perseverance
Duckworth’s life research centred around grit. She contended that it was more infuential than intelligence and predicted outcomes better than IQ.
The infamous 10,000 hours argument: Sustained practice and perseverance can lead to expertise.

Q

Grit and C (importance and method of research and one issue with the study) (2)

A

Schmidt et al (2018)

  1. Grit and C are only investigated as composite measures (often declared ‘the same thing) or just ‘proactive conscientiousness - Crede, 2015) - avoid the redundancy of labelling
  2. Using the NEO P -IR and a factor analysis to assess the facets of each (based on the hierarchy articulated by Roberts et al (2005)
  3. Only used one measure of personality (the NEO P IR)

Q

Grit and C research findings

A

Schmidt et al (2018) assessed the facets of grit vs C. Perseverance was found to be almost inseperable to C and it’s lower-order constructs. However, consistency was not. Suggests that they are a) different and b) more detailed investigation is needed into the taxonomy of C

Q

Research on Grit

A

Grittier teachers are more likely to stay in teaching and be better teachers. Army cadets are more likely to stay in training if they are grittier

Q

Issues with grit research (2)

A
  1. Restriction of range (when all of a demographic excel at something, the results may be overshadowed by one single factor). E.g. NBA players + height
  2. Success often needs more than hard work (e.g., social skills) Bracket + Ivencic (2014) found emotional ability and C determined success, not grit.
