SBAs Flashcards
What are onset/offset of a volatile related to?
The blood:gas partition coefficient.
The lower the coefficient, the faster the onset.
What is volatility of a volatile anaesthetic related to?
It’s related to the boiling point.
The lower the BP the higher the volatility.
What does potency of a volatile gas relate to?
Potency relates to oil:gas partition coefficient and MAC.
The higher the oil:gas partition coefficient/lower the MAC - the greater the potency.
How does botox work?
Botulinum toxin is an exotoxin produced by the anaerobic bacterium Clostridium botulinum and now used as a therapeutic drug.
It inhibits acetylcholine release from nerve terminals.
How does clarithromycin work?
It’s a macrolide- these inhibit protein synthesis by binding to the ribosome and interfering with translocation
What happens to the RMP as potassium ions move out?
Becomes more negative
What happens to the RMP as potassium moves into the cell?
Becomes more positive
Why, in the fetus, does blood supplying the brain have a higher oxygen content than blood supplying the trunk and lower limbs?
Because the blood with a higher O2 content flows preferentially across the foramen ovale and is ejected via the left ventricle into the carotid arteries
What does the ductus venosus do in the fetal circulation?
ensures that a majority of oxygenated blood from the umbilical vein bypasses the portal hepatic circulation
What does the ductus arteriosus do in the fetal circulation?
Ensures that most of the blood ejected from the pulmonary artery bypasses the collapsed fetal lungs
What do the dorsal columns of the spinal cord convey?
Fine touch, proprioception and vibration sensations are all conveyed in the dorsal column tracts.
How long is succinylcholine safe for after burns?
24hrs
