Sb1e Enzymes And Nutrition Flashcards
How do bacteria get substances for energy growth and development
Bacteria release digestive enzymes into their environment and then absorb digested food into their cells .
When you chew a piece of starchy bread for a while it starts to taste sweet. Suggest a reason for this .
The amylase in saliva reacts with the starch in the bread breaking it down to produce simple sugars

What are enzymes referred to as
Biological catalysts
What are enzymes made up of and what makes the different enzymes .
Enzymes are made up of amino acids linked together in one ore more polypeptide chain . The chains then move and bend to form three unique enzymes . So lipase and amylase are made from the same base substance they are just shaped differently which allows them to bind with the different substrate
About amaylase
Where is it found? Saliva and small intestine
Where is it made in ? Salivary glands , pancreas , small intestine
What does it do ? Breaks down carbohydrates into smaller sugars such as maltose
About protease
Where is it made ? Stomach , pancreas , small intestine
What does it do ? Breaks down proteins into amino acids
About lipase
Where is it made ? Pancreas , small intestine
What does it do ? Breaks down lipids into glycerol and fatty acids
