Satire Vs. Comedy Flashcards
ABSURDIST
Absurdist or surrealist humor is a form of humour based on deliberate violations of expected reasoning, producing events and behaviours that are obviously illogical.
PARODY
A parody is an imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect.
PUNS
A pun is a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words which sound alike but have different meanings.
SARCASM
Sarcasm is the use of remarks that clearly mean the opposite of what they say, made in order to hurt someone’s feelings or to criticize something in a humorous way.
REVERSAL
used to present the opposite of the normal order in an attempt to bring light to societal inequalities. For example, mice performing experiments on humans.
EXAGGERATION
to enlarge, increase, or represent something far beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous, and its faults can be seen. For example the gigantic piles of trash that cover the Earth in the movie WALL-E
INCONGRUITY
these are inconsistencies that are bizarre, strange, or unsuitable. The presentation of things out of place or absurd in relation to their surroundings. For example, escalators that lead to a fitness gym; it is satire because escalators are doing the opposite of what the gym is supposed to do.
WARPED LOGIC
absurdities presented as common logic or common sense. For example, Penguins are black and white; some old TV shows are black and white; therefore Penguins are old TV shows.
