Absurdity
Something that’s ridiculous is presented
Allusion
Making a reference to a famous, literary, or historical person or event to add meaning through connections and symbolism
Burlesque
Either a trivial subject is treated in an elevated and serious manner, or a serious subject is approached in a low or comic manner
Caricature
Technique of exaggerating for comic and satiric effect one particular visual feature of the target, to achieve a grotesque or ridiculous effect. The term caricature generally refers more to drawing than it does to writing
Colloquialism
Informal words like “cop” or “guy” that are often avoided in essays
Farce
Exciting laughter through exaggerated improbable situations; usually contains low comedy: quarrelling, horseplay, drunks…
Hyperbole
Overstating and exaggerating your point for effect
Incongruity
Present things out of place in relation to their surroundings
Invective
Open insult for shock effect
Irony
Verbal - One thing means another
Situational - What happens is opposite of what is expected
Juxtaposition
side by side of opposites, usually to highlight a characteristic
Obscenity
Language that is offensive to accepted standards of decency or modesty
Paradox
Statement that seems illogical but in some unexpected way may be true. Ex. “This sentence is false.”
Pun/Double-Entendre
words in sentences that have two meanings. ex. “You cannot tuna fish.”
Reductio Ad Absurdum
Author agrees enthusiastically with the basic attitudes or assumptions she wishes to satirize and, by pushing them to a logically ridiculous extreme, exposes the foolishness of the original attitudes and assumptions.
