A
Prior to standing SAR duty, pilots shall be night, coupled approach, and SAR current.

A
Pilots shall have flown 2 night automatic approaches to a coupled hover utilizing a windline rescue pattern within the preceeding 60 days.
The rescue hoist operational check should be completed on the first flight of the day to ensure SAR capability.

- Shall be equipped with operable stabilization and automatic hover equipment, or have sufficient external reference to establish and maintain stabilized hover.

- The presence of personal weapons, CSW, fixed forward firing weapons, torpedoes, CATMs, DATMs, or expendables shall not prevent an otherwise SAR capable helicopter from being tasked with PG responsibilities or SAR.

A
- Any naval helicopter that is assigned the primary mission to operate as a rescue vehicle over water shall have as a member of its crew: one AW who is completely outfitted for water entry and has completed an approved CNO/CMC rescue swimmer school.
- When SAR/PG is briefed as the primary mission, or when it becomes the primary mission, the rescue AW shall be prepared for immediate water entry.
- Life rafts of sufficient capacity to accommodate passengers and crew shall be provided in all aircraft when there would be a significant risk of water entry in the event of a mishap.

Navy SAR SOP
A
- The HAC shall have completed a helicopter initial SAR training syllabus and shall have also completed an annual SAR evaluation.
- In order to be night SAR current, the HAC shall have logged 2 night hours within the last 45 days.
- For night overwater SAR missions, the HAC shall be current in accordance with the NATOPS/local instructions for automatic approaches to a coupled hover, and, at a minimum, have completed 2 night automatic approaches to a coupled hover within the last 60 days, with each approach being proceeded by a windline rescue pattern and all applicable NATOPS SAR procedures shall be completed/simulated during the evolution.
