What is the definition of a sandwich generation
The sandwich generation is a generation that simultaneously looks after their children and their parents providing emotional and physical support. This term is given to people who are in their early 50s who support elderly parents, children and possible grandchildren.
Who talks about the sandwich generation
Hillman (2007) and Hasting (1997) found that in families with multiple disadvantages eg: Lone parents of disabled children, grandparents were providing emotional, practical and financial support often at cost of themselves in terms of time and earnings
What are the reasons for the sandwich generation 1
- Ageing population: With life expectancy growing many people now experience ill health for longer periods of time before death this is known as the ‘fourth age’ where elders are dependent on care from others such as their children
