Sampling Techniques Flashcards
What are 5 different sampling techniques?
- Random sampling
- Volunteer sampling
- Opportunity sampling
- Snowball sampling
- Stratified sampling
What is random sampling and what is 1 disadvantage of it?
Where everybody has an equal chance of being randomly selected, e.g. taking names out of a hat or computer generated.
D - chance of being biased.
What is volunteer sampling and what is 1 disadvantage of it?
Advertise people to help you.
D - volunteers may be more motivated to participate so may not reflect population and may results may have demand characteristics.
What is opportunity sampling and what is 1 disadvantage of it?
Asking anyone you can find to participate.
D - most of the population is excluded as you are only asking people from 1 area. May also be unconscious experimenter bias.
What is stratified sampling and what is 1 disadvantage of it?
Sub groups in a population are identified and participants are then chosen to represent these groups.
D - if you miss out a certain group they won’t be represented.
What is snowball sampling and what is 1 disadvantage of it?
Starting with a few and then a asking them to direct you to other suitable participants.
D - may be a biased, unrepresentative sample as they may be friends or family that are from the same area, age, gender, etc.
