Sampling Techniques Flashcards
1
Q
What are examples of ‘Representative Sampling?’
A
- Random sampling
- Quasi-random/Systematic sampling
- Stratified random sampling
- Quota sampling
2
Q
What are examples of ‘Non-Representative Sampling?’
A
- Snowball sampling
- Opportunity sampling
3
Q
What is ‘Random Sampling?’
A
- Sample selected purely by chance
- Large enough random sample should reflect characteristics
- Not all samples are representative
4
Q
What is ‘Quasi-Random/Systematic Sampling?’
A
Every nth person in the sampling frame is selected
5
Q
What is ‘Stratified Random Sampling?’
A
- Researcher stratifies population in sampling frame by age, gender, ethnicity etc
- Sample is created in same proportions
6
Q
What is ‘Quota Sampling?’
A
- Population is stratified and given a quota E.g. 20 females + 20 males
- Respondents fit their characteristics
7
Q
What are the ‘Practical’ reasons preventing a representative sample?
A
- Social characteristics of research population may not be known
- Impossible to create sampling frame
- Potential respondents may refuse to participate
8
Q
What is ‘Snowball Sampling?’
A
- Collecting a sample by contacting a key number of individuals
- Not representative but a useful way of contacting a sample
9
Q
What is ‘Opportunity Sampling?’
A
- Choosing individuals who are easiest to access/captive audience
- Sample is unlikely to be representative
