Sampling technique Flashcards
Opportunity sampling
When the researcher uses people available at the time of research.
Strengths of opportunity sampling
Quick and easy
Convenient for researcher
Weaknesses of opportunity sampling
Can produce a biased sample
Random sampling
When everyone in the target population has the same chance of being selected.
Strengths of random sampling
No bias in the way people are selected, therefore the sample is more likely to be representative.
Weaknesses of random sampling
Time-consuming
Not always possible
Volunteer sampling
When participants select themselves and are selected for sampling. Some sort of advertising is used.
Strengths of volunteer sampling
Can reach a wide range of people in a cost effective way
Weaknesses of volunteer sampling
Volunteers are often more motivated and willing which may affect their performance.
Stratified sampling
When the proportions of the sample match the proportions of the target population.
Strengths of stratified sampling
Produces a representative sample of the target population
Weaknesses of stratified sampling
Time-consuming
