Sampling technique 1.5 Flashcards
How is percentage cover calculated?
Use a quadrat with 100 squares. Represents 1%
Outline the procedure to random sampling at 2 different sites
Use random number generator to get 2 sets of random coordinates (x,y)
Use two tape measures to create axis (10m)
Place quadrat at each coordinate, record % cover
Repeat 1-3 at different site
How can the results from the 2 sites be tested?
Use a statistical test that compares 2 means
In which area is the appropriate sampling method a transect?
Where a correlation between abiotic variable and ecological gradient exists
Which statistical test would be suitable for correlating results from transect line?
Spearman’s rank
What is abundance?
Number of different species present in a habitat
What is abundance affected by?
Examples?
Abiotic and biotic factors
Ab - temperature, light intensity
B - competition, disease
What are the two types of transect lines?
Line transect - organisms that touch the transect line
Belt transect - quadrats placed at regular intervals along transect line
What do a belt transect allow to be estimated?
Density, % frequency, % area cover
