Sampling Methods Flashcards
Random sampling
Every member of the population has an equal chance of being chosen. Complete a list of all members of the target population. All names on the sampling frame are assigned a number. The sample is generated through the use of some lottery method (a computer based randomiser or picking names from a hat)
Stratified sampling
Classifying the population into categories and then choosing a sample which consists of participants from each category in the same proportions as they are in the population
Systematic sampling
(examples) occurs when every nth ‘person’ is chosen from your target population e.g. every 2nd house on a street, or every 10th student on a school register. Produced for e.g., all students in Tomlinscote are organised according to alphabetical order, and then every 2nd student is selected
Volunteer/self-selected sampling
Consists of participants becoming part of the study because they volunteer when asked or in response to an advert
Opportunity sampling
Participants who are ready available. The researcher simply takes the chance to ask around whoever is around at the time of theit study. Most market research is carried out this way
