sampling methods Flashcards
Handling fish and stress
Handling fish induces both acute and chronic stress responses
Acute Increases in stress hormones triggering increased metabolic rate, oxygen
consumption decrease osmoregulation and buoyancy
Chronic: Decreased growth rates loss of feeding and reproductive opportunity and
changes in behaviours
Passive and active techniques What the difference?
Passive: Gear set up and fish passively move into it, entangled, trapped, or even angled Active: Gear actively moved to target fish aggregation
Gear selectivity and/or efficiency?
Selectivity: Gear somehow targets only certain portion of available targets (e.g., size, species, sex of fish)
Efficiency: Catch per unit time or effort that the gear is used
Types of fishing techniques
angling (fish rod) (active)
seining (active)
dip nets (active)
fyke net (passive)
minnow trap (passive)
hoop nets (passive)
