Applying the findings of a particular study to the population
Opportunity sampling
A sample of participants produced by selecting people who are most easily available at the time of the study.
Population
The group of people that the researcher is interested in.
The group of people from whom the sample is drawn
The group of people about whom generalisation can be made.
Random sampling
A sample of participants produced by using random techniques which allows for varied members of the target population to be selected
Sampling
The method used to select participants.
Or to sample behaviors in an observation such as event or time sampling
Stratified sampling
A sample of participants produced by identifying sub-groups according to their frequency in the population. Participants are then selected randomly from the subgroups.
Systematic sampling
A sample obtained by selecting every nth person. This can be random sampling; Participants are the selected every nth person after that.
Volunteer bias
A form of sampling bias because volunteer participants have special characteristics, such as usually being more highly motivated.
Volunteer sampling (self-selected sampling)
A sample of participants that relies on volunteers .
