Sampling Flashcards
Define an abiotic factor
An abiotic factor is a non-living physical factor that can affect the distribution of organisms
What are some example of abiotic factors ?
Light intensity
Temperature
Ph
Moisture
Define a biotic factor
A biotic factor are living factors that can affect the distribution of organisms
What are some examples of biotic factors ?
Predation
Disease
Grazing
Competition for food
What are potential sources of error when using a quadrat ?
Quadrats are not placed randomly
Too few quadrats used
Plants miscounted
What are potential sources of error when using a pitfall trap ?
Insects do not fall into trap Insects eat each other Trap fills with rain water Insects are eaten by predators Insects drown
How would you minimise error of insects not falling in the trap ?
Make sure top is level with soil
Camouflage the trap
Describe how you would measure light intensity
Use a light meter, hold the sensor out from the body and avoid shadows
