Sampling Flashcards
What are the different types of sampling?
Random
Systematic
Stratified
Opportunity
Volunteer
What’s random sampling?
All members of population have an equal chance of being selected
Selected by a random number generator
What’s systematic sampling?
Every nth member of the population is selected e.g every 5th person on the register
What’s stratified sampling?
Composition of sample reflects the proportions of the people in certain subgroups within target or wider population
Researcher identifies different strata that make up population the proportions needed for the sample to be representative are worked out. Finally participants make up each stratum selected using random sampling
What’s opportunity sampling?
Researchers select anyone who’s willing and available
What’s volunteer sampling?
Particpants select themselves to be part of sample
May be done by researcher placing an advertisement in newspaper
Evaluation of random sample
Unbiased
Difficult
Time consuming
Evaluation of systematic sample
Objective
Time consuming
Participants may refuse to take part
Evaluation of stratified sampling
Generalisation of findings are possible
Cannot reflect all the time as everyone is different
Evaluation of opportunity sampling
Less costly
Cannot be generalised
Researcher bias can occur
Evaluation of volunteer sampling
Minimal input from researcher
Less time consuming
Volunteer bias can occur (asking for volunteers may attract a certain profile of people - more likely to try and please the researcher)
