Cognitive Interview Flashcards
Why are the 4 techniques used in a cognitive interview?
Report everything
Reinstate the context
Reverse the order
Change the perspective
What comes under report everything?
Witnesses encouraged to say everything they remember even if it’s minor or they thinks it’s invaluable
What comes under reinstate the context?
Witness told to return to original crime scene and imagine environment (5 senses)
What comes under reverse the order?
Events should be recalled in a different order so questions should be asked backwards (in a way) this reduces dishonesty in the witnesses response
What comes under change the perspective?
Witnesses should recall incident from others perspectives e.g. the perpetrator
This reduces chances of schema - expectations of what you think is supposed to happen
What are 2 evaluation points of the CI?
Variations of CI (pick and mix interviews)
Support for the effectiveness of the CI (köhnken)
What did köhnken et al discover / research?
Meta-analysis combined data form 55 studies comparing CI with standard police interview
CI gave a 41% increase in accurate info compared to police interview
Shows CI ensures more accurate recall is completed
What is the variation of the CI that’s been taken up by the police?
A pick and mix interview this means it’s hard to compare the effectiveness of different approaches in research studies
It is also more flexible and individuals can develop their own approach according to what works best for them
