Sampling Flashcards
Sampling
Sampling is when researchers take a sample from the population for their
observation.
Volunteer Sampling
When the researcher posts an advert and people volunteer to be participants in the study.
oppurtunity sampling
When a researcher approaches members of the public who are willing and available to participate in the experiment.
Systematic Sampling
When researchers select every nth person from the population to participate
Random Sampling
When a participant chooses randomly from a full population of people.
Every person within the population has an equal chance of being a participant.
Stratified Sampling
Composition of the sampling reflects the proportions of people in certain subgroups within the target / wider population.
P+C of Random sample
+ Potentially unbiased
+ Confounding or extraneous variables should be equally divided between the different groups, enhancing internal validity.
- Difficult and Time consuming to conduct
P+C of Systematic sample
+ Objective method
- Time consuming
- People who have been selected may refuse which at that point could be a volunteer sample
P+C of Stratified sample
+ Representative of the population - high population validity
- Cannot account for every single subgroup
P+C OF Opportunity sample
+ Convenient
- Unrepresentative - low population validity
P+C of Volunteer Sample
+ Easy and participants are engaged
- Volunteer Bias
- Responsive to cues
