Sampling Flashcards
Population
Whole set of items in interest
Census
Observes every member of the population
Sample
Selection of observations taking from a subset of the population
Census advantages
Complete accuracy
Census disadvantages
Time consuming, expensive, hard to process the large amount of data
Sample advantages
Quicker, cheaper, fewer people have to respond
Sample disadvantages
Data not completely accurate, sample may not be large enough
Simple random sampling
Picking names out of a hat, completely random
Simple random advantages
Free of bias, easy, cheap, equal chance
Simple random disadvantages
Not suitable for large samples and populations, sampling frame needed
Systematic sampling
Elements are chosen at random intervals from an ordered list
Systematic advantages
Simple, quick, suitable for large samples
Systematic disadvantages
Sampling frame is needed, bias introduced if sampling frame is not random
Stratified sampling
The population is divided into mutually exclusive strata and a random sample is taken from each
Stratified advantages
Sample accurately reflects population structure, proportional representation
