Sampling Flashcards
What is sampling?
The process of selecting a representative group from the population under study
We want it to be representative so we can generalise the results
What is sampling bias?
Sampling bias occurs when the sample does not reflect the characteristics of the target population
What is random sampling?
This technique involves everyone in the target population having an equal chance of being selected
What is volunteer sampling?
Sample consists of those who have offered to be in the study. This can be for free or sometimes incentives (such as money) can be offered
What is opportunity sampling?
This method uses people from the target population available at the time who are willing to take part – based on convenience
What is stratified sampling?
This involves identifying different types of people that make up the target population and working out the proportions needed in order for the sample to be representative
What is systematic sampling?
Chooses subjects in an orderly way from the target population, like every nth participant on a list of names.
